Allen Hopkins
Allen Hopkins has been a Golden Link member since the beginning: present at the first planning meeting in May 1971, and over a half-century serving multiple terms as president, and other board offices.
During that time he’s also been an active folk performer in Rochester and regionally, playing bluegrass (Flower City Ramblers), historical music programs (Flint Hill Folk at Genesee Country Village), blues (Nancy Park & Blues-Grass), Celtic (Thistledown, Innisfree), klezmer (12 Corners Klezmer Band), and generic “folk” as a solo, and with a variety of partners. Allen plays (with varying skill levels) most stringed instruments –– guitar, banjo, ukulele, mandolins of various sizes, Autoharp, Dobro, bass fiddle –– plus “free reed” instruments like harmonica and concertina.
He’s organized and managed concert series such as Tunes By the Tracks and Rochester Folkus, events like the Genesee Country Village Fiddlers’ Fair and the North Winton Village Festival, and instrumental classes and workshops at Hochstein School and Brighton Recreation. He has performed regionally from Rochester to Boston and New York City, at festivals, coffeehouses, libraries and historical societies. Currently he plays around 150 gigs annually, largely at seniors’ facilities, as well as local concerts and festivals.
August will find him at the Brockport Arts Festival, Wayne County Fair, GCV Fiddlers’ Fair, Tunes By the Tracks, as well as the Members’ Showcase. Allen values sharing folk music most–– singing big choruses, jamming long into the night, passing the music on from one generation to the next. “Always glad to join fellow Golden Linkers, making music together and keeping it going for another 50 years!”
