No doubt you have watched performances of spirituals, gospel, blues, jazz, R & B, soul music that seem to literally draw audiences of all colors into the songs. Scott Ainslie, renowned acoustic blues guitarist, singer and songwriter, is well aware of this. He explains that it is not only a matter of talent—it is also the encouragement and training to use phrasing and expressive techniques customarily used in speech.
You can learn to do the same, he says. In this workshop, a volunteer or two will help demonstrate how to recognize techniques we use in speech and how they can be used, even in small ways, to affect the power of your singing. By listening, all participants will get to feel how those small changes in phrasing and delivery can affect the emotional power of the song and the way it is heard.
“I have done this work with beginners, amateurs, and professional singers on both sides of the color line,” Scott says. “The work is impactful and durable. It continues to inspire new ways of thinking about a song and about what it is we do when we present a song to an audience.”
Scott has performed for Golden Link most recently with Reggie Harris at the 2018 live Turtle Hill Festival. A lifelong musician, he learned southern old-time ballads, banjo and fiddle from senior musicians in North Carolina and West Virginia and blues from his black elders in North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia and Mississippi.
Be sure to reserve a place by registering for this event by Tuesday, May 11. Golden Link will send you a Zoom invitation on May 12. We will begin admitting people into the workshop at about 6:45 pm on May 13. Questions may be directed to our Education Coordinator.
