MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Sing Around - Leader Bill Chandler

Member Spotlight Sing Around!

In any month that has more than 4 Tuesdays, we use the 5th Tuesday to highlight some of our talented members.  This is one of those special nights!  We'll be starting the evening with a short performance of several songs from each of 3 performers.  After that, the sing around will continue as usual.

This evening's SPOTLIGHT PERFORMERS are:
Joe LaMay and Sherri Reese

Lamay Reese Stage 600pxThese two met at a Golden Link Tuesday night singaround in 1998. They were drawn to each other’s music and began performing together. Before long, they gained a reputation for their original songs and old-style harmonies, as well as their on-stage presentation of their favorite traditional and contemporary folk songs.

It has been said that Joe & Sherri "know a good song and write a good song." As testament to their songwriting, a number of their original songs have been recorded by other folksingers and bluegrass bands. Their 2019 release of LaMay & Reese: Songs of Joe LaMay & Sherri Reese in Other Voices features fifteen recorded covers of their original songs.

In support of their local community in Kentucky, Joe & Sherri are music directors of the Carnegie Community Arts Center, host the monthly 3rd Friday Folk at the Carnegie, the weekly Lake Cumberland Jammers, and the Somerset Songwriters Group, as well as involvement in other local musical events.

Mike Strobel

Strobel Mike 800pxFrom Mike: Just an old hippy, who kept on playing music and enjoying the daylights out of it.  I was blessed with 3 wonderful kids and 2 great grandkids.  I like donuts, beer and pretty girls, in that order !!!

My resume at Golden Link included :   Concert Chair for the Turtle Hill Folk Festival, the year we booked Odetta, Les Sampou et al. , one to two years as membership director and one year as director of community events.

Rick Pollay

Pollay Rick 600px

Rick was for too long a boy soprano in a serious New England church choir, singing with his father, a dance band pianist. He switched to trombone to escape the four days a week rehearsal and performance schedule, and to play in his High School marching band. He didn’t return to singing until nearing retirement some 20 years ago.

Since then he has sung bass in various high spirited choirs, hosted a Gospel Train radio show, and sung regularly with the Vancouver (BC) Folk Song Society and their sea shanty group, The Lazy Jacks.

The COVID conditions have enabled him to “sail the cyber seas” to sing with folks in several ports of call, including Rochester. His in-laws live in upstate New York, most staying close to the homestead in Weedsport on the Erie Canal.

Since we can’t meet in person right now, this event is a “virtual” sing-arounds on Zoom.  For details on how to use Zoom, how to join, and how to participate, Click Here
