Every March, Allen Hopkins says if you have a green sweater, a guitar and an Irish song, you’ll find a St. Patrick’s Day gig. But, by that time, it’s almost too late to learn one! In this workshop, Allen and co-hosts Pat Carey and Cathy McGrath will talk a bit about Irish music, sing and teach some songs, and suggest sources and techniques to develop repertoire. Bring an instrument and get in the St. Pat’s spirit a month early. (We can’t promise Guinness, though…)
Allen Hopkins is well-known to Golden Linkers, having helped start the club, showing up at nearly every sing-around with his carload of instruments, and insisting on choruses and participation. He’s played folk music in Rochester for 50 years, and is a member of the Celtic band Innisfree.
Pat Carey (right) is a soloist and member of Cuisle Mo Chroi (Pulse of My Heart), the Celtic music women’s trio. She is active in the local chapter of Comhaltas Celteori Eirann, the Irish music and cultural society, and plays flute, whistle, mandolin and guitar on Irish and other tunes.
Cathy McGrath (left) is also a member of Cuisle Mo Chroi, as well as the seasonal Christmas Ceildh Band and the Steppin’ Out String Band. She’s often found at Irish sessions and maintains a solo career entertaining both adults and children with song, dance, and musical games. Pat, Cathy and Allen have performed together for over 40 years as members of the Flint Hill Folk.
Come and enjoy songs and tunes from the long tradition of Irish and Irish-American music, and perhaps add them to your own singing repertoire –– before you “ramble, and must go” to that night’s sing-around. St. Patrick’s Day is coming!
After the workshop, attend the second half of the singaround and bring a new Irish tune to share.
Seating is limited, so don't miss out - register early! Be sure to register (online only) by Sunday, February 9th. For questions, contact our Education Coordinator.
