David Russell wasn’t born playing the autoharp and he claims it’s not as hard as it looks. Since joining Golden Link in 2009, he has continued honing guitar, voice, and autoharp skills, with diverse instruments in-between. Autoharp, however, has taken him to far-off places to learn from Bryan Bowers, Karen Mueller, and others. Meanwhile, he performs about town solo and with the String Chicken Trio and a more recently formed Trio of Three.
His workshop will include:
• Instructor evaluation of your autoharp
• Tuning, tuning, and more tuning
• How to hold your harp - straps and bean bags
• Chord bar arrangement
• Strumming
• Picking, pinching, and pinch-plucking
• Finger picks - "What are the best picks for me?"
• Melody picking
• Diatonic vs. chromatic configurations
• Demonstration of open noting
Requisites are an autoharp, tuning wrench, and a working tuner; also finger and thumb picks if you have them. Some autoharps are available; please contact the instructor before registering to reserve one, at vicepresident.folk@goldenlink.org or 585-402-3243 (text or call). Registration is limited to eight, so be sure to pre-register early, online only, at http://www.goldenlink.org.
Lastly, stay afterward and enjoy the second part of the Tuesday singaround!
Workshop seats are limited to 8 people so be sure to register (online only) by Sunday, November 9 at midnight. For questions, contact our Education Coordinator.
