“Haunting, melancholy, hopeful and heartfelt all at once, Joe’s gorgeous baritone brings new perspective to the traditional, honour and homage to those written by others, and breathes life to his originals.” – Suze Casey, Calgary Folk Club
Internationally acclaimed songwriter, performer, and recording artist Joe Jencks offers a special concert featuring songs of the season.
A 25-year veteran of the international folk circuit, Joe is known for his unique merging of social consciousness, spiritual exploration, and musical beauty. On A Midwinter’s Night continues in that vein, while focusing on songs of the holiday season, songs of history and humanity, as well as some winter favorites.
Jencks embraces music from many centuries and many walks of life to craft a holiday concert that is all at once celebratory of the season and mindful of the complex realities of the world. Uplifting, engaging, and shining light where it is most needed, On A Midwinter’s Night will stitch together a musical quilt to keep you warm on the coldest of wintry nights.
Based in Chicago, Joe merges conservatory training with his Irish roots and working-class upbringing, enthralling diverse audiences around the country and abroad with his approachable style. Blending well-crafted instrumentals and vivid songwriting, Jencks serves it all up with a lyric baritone voice that has the edgy richness of a good sea-salt caramel. In addition to his solo work, he co-founded the dynamic harmony trio Brother Sun with Greg Greenway and Pat Wictor.
In August 2022, Jencks released his 17th recording, The Coming of the Years, an album that stands firmly in the modern Celtic traditions and is still quintessentially a Joe Jencks record. Centered around songs he wrote while on tour in Ireland over a 12-year period, this album emerges as a synergistic blend of past and present merging with themes of immigration spanning multiple generations.
