Golden Link presents the 51st Annual Turtle Hill Folk Festival on September 9, 10, and 11, 2022
Annual Golden Link event features concerts, workshops, singing,
jamming, dancing, food, and fun.
Rochester, N.Y.—Enjoy a great weekend of folk music at the 51st Annual Turtle Hill Folk Festival, presented by the Golden Link Folk Singing Society at the Rotary Sunshine Campus, 809 Five Points Rd., in Rush, NY on September 9, 10 and 11, 2022. The festival will feature evening concerts by Windborne, Cosy Sheridan with Charlie Koch,
Magpie, Loren & LJ Barrigar, Jim & Susie Malcolm, and Richie Stearns & Aaron Lipp. Please note: Due to COVID, everyone attending must be fully vaccinated and provide vaccination confirmation and picture ID at the gate.
At Turtle Hill, the audience not only gets to see these performers on stage, but also interact with them during workshops and small presentations during the day on Saturday and Sunday, with many informal opportunities to sing and play music together. There will also be late-night singing and jamming. Rough camping is available for a small fee, and you can also reserve a bed in the rustic, heated bunkhouses.
Friday, September 9, 7:00–10:00 pm—Concert features (in performance order):
Richie Stearns & Aaron Lipp: Richie Stearns is a legendary banjo player and singer, and a founding member of the neo-traditional alternative band The Horse Flies and roots music band Donna the Buffalo. He also has performed with Natalie Merchant, Bela Fleck, Pete Seeger, David Byrne, Billy Bragg & Wilco, Old Crow Medicine Show, and Joan Baez – and he is the president of the iconic GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance.
Aaron Lipp is from Naples, NY and has been a professional musician since age 16. From performing on stage, recording in the studio and teaching lessons, he has found his place in music. Throughout a multitude of different genre adventures and instrumentation, he has found his home in traditional Appalachian old-time music, classic bluegrass sounds, and the blues - all fused into a new sound of the next generation, while paying tribute to the traditions of our ancestors.
Cosy Sheridan with Charlie Koch: Cosy Sheridan first appeared on the national folk scene in 1992 when she won the songwriting contests at The Kerrville Folk Festival and The Telluride Bluegrass Festival. The Boston Globe wrote: “she is now being called one of the best new singer/songwriters.” She has been on the road ever since, playing clubs, concert halls, and coffeehouses across the country. She continues to be one of the most prolific songwriters in the folk scene. Backed by the strong rhythms and harmonies of her bass player Charlie Koch, she plays a percussive bluesy guitar style, often in open tunings and occasionally with two capos on the guitar neck. She teaches classes in songwriting, performance, and guitar at workshops and adult music camps across the country, and is the director of Moab Folk Camp in Moab, Utah.
Jim & Susie Malcolm: For the past 30 years and more, Jim Malcolm has been the ultimate Scots troubadour, taking the traditional songs of Scotland and his own prizewinning compositions to all corners of the UK and around almost every state in the USA. His voice is one of the finest in Scotland, and his mellifluous guitar playing is the perfect accompaniment. He plays mouthorgan to a standard you’ll rarely hear. Jim was voted Songwriter of the Year in the Scots Trad Music Awards, and was nominated three times for Scots Singer of the Year. He has 15 solo CDs to his credit, and has appeared on countless others, including three albums with the world-renowned Old Blind Dogs, from his eight years as their frontman. Old Blind Dogs are famously Prince Charles’ favorite Scottish band. This year he has another trick up his sleeve, as his wife Susie joins him on stage. You may have heard her voice singing harmonies on Jim’s CDs, but with their children off to pastures new Susie is now entering stage left. An award-winning traditional singer herself, Susie sings songs from the North East of Scotland and has a penchant for ballads. Their 2017 debut album as a duo, Spring Will Follow On was warmly received and has been widely played across two continents and its successor, The Berries, has been called “a masterclass in Scottish traditional song”. Their third duo CD, Auld Toon Shuffle, will be released in the spring of 2022. Together they offer harmonies and humour…tales from the road, the riverside and from the home front, and are not to be missed.
Saturday, September 10, 7:00–10:00 pm—Concert features (in performance order):
Magpie: With a career that has spanned more than 40 years, Terry Leonino and Greg Artzner as Magpie have traveled the globe, bringing their unique sound and breathtaking versatility to audiences everywhere. From traditional songs to vintage blues, swing and country to folk classics to contemporary and stirring original compositions, they cover a lot of musical ground. With their powerful voices and harmonies and their excellent instrumental arrangements on guitars, mandolin, harmonica, dulcimer, and concertina, their sound is much bigger than just two people. Award-winning recording artists, songwriters, musical historians, and social activists, Terry and Greg always promise a presentation that is highly entertaining as well as provocative and deeply moving.
Loren & LJ Barrigar: Loren started playing guitar when he was only four years old, and by the time he was six, played the Chet Atkins hit “Yackety Axe” in front of thousands of country music fans at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. He went on to study with Jimmy Atkins (Chet’s brother) which led to a touring career with his family band from Nashville to Las Vegas. Since settling down in Central New York, he has been in constant demand as a studio musician. Loren's finely-honed songwriting skills have launched his melodies on NBC’s #1 rated show “ER,” “The Young and The Restless,” and on a Christmas CD with BB King and Patti Labelle. He has performed with some of the best acoustic players in the world including Stephen Bennett, Richard Smith, John Knowles, Muriel Anderson, and Loren’s friend and mentor Tommy Emmanuel, the Australian guitar sensation. He has also recorded with Multiple Grammy winner and legendary producer Lloyd Maines. Loren's son, LJ Barrigar, is a fine fingerstyle guitarist in his own right and will be joining Loren for the festival.
Windborne: The New England-based group Windborne explores folk music from around the world. This internationally acclaimed quartet of vocal chameleons specializes in close harmony singing, shifting effortlessly between songs of workers’ rights to old-time music, from English ballads to folk songs from Corsica and Bulgaria. Praised for “the purity of their voices, strength of their material, and attention to detail in their arrangements,” Lynn Mahoney Rowan, Will Thomas Rowan, Lauren Breunig, and Jeremy Carter-Gordon share a vibrant energy onstage. The four singers grew up immersed in the traditional song and dance communities of New England and discovered a love of world folk music in their teens. They educate as they entertain, telling stories about the music and explaining the characteristics and stylistic elements of the traditions in which they sing.

Festival Site, Camping, and Food: Golden Link’s Turtle Hill Folk Festival will be held at the Rotary Sunshine Campus, 809 Five Points Road, Rush, NY, a short drive south of Rochester. Rough camping (tents or RVs; no hook-ups) is available for $15 per site for the weekend. For a small fee, you can reserve a bunkhouse bed for one or both nights. Showers are available for campers. All facilities are wheelchair accessible. The Rotary Sunshine Campus is an alcohol-free, non-smoking, pet-free campus (except for service animals). Due to COVID, everyone attending must be fully vaccinated and provide vaccination confirmation and picture ID at the gate. COVID regulations will be subject to modifications as needed. Please check the Golden Link website for further information regarding indoor masking. Food will be catered by Effortlessly Healthy, Wegmans, and Mark’s Pizzeria, and must be pre-ordered during online registration. Only snacks and beverages will be available for purchase during the festival. You may bring your own food and non-alcoholic beverages.
Tickets: Tickets will be available at www.goldenlink.org, with a discount for Golden Link members. Online registration begins July 1 and runs until September 5. Tickets may also be purchased at the gate.
