Many of us, when we pick up a guitar, automatically play in first position (using only the first five frets). But there are so many more frets, and as they say: You’ve paid for them, why not use them?
Guitarist Kinloch Nelson, longtime performer and teacher, will explain why, when and how to do so in this workshop. “Escaping the first position is easier than you think,” he says. The workshop will include moments to practice on your own but don’t worry; you won’t be heard by others or called upon to play. Kinloch also will take questions, either during or afterwards. Topics include using barre and non-barre chords, recognizable shapes, minor v. major, and adding a seventh.
Since learning Tom Dooley on guitar as a child, Kinloch has become a widely respected classical guitarist also performing folk, jazz, rock, American popular music and original works. He was on the Hochstein Music School faculty for 25 years, co-founded the Guitar Society of Rochester and is acting president of its successor, the Rochester Guitar Club. More information is available at kinlochnelson.com.
“A musician with incredible depth and breadth, Kinloch Nelson plays with the virtuosity of a classical master and the sensibility of a pop performer.” (Portland Press Herald, Maine)
Be sure to register here to reserve your place at the workshop by Dec. 7. Golden Link will send you a Zoom invitation on Dec. 8. We will begin admitting people 10-15 minutes early into the workshop.
